Fitness, Exercise, and Diet: The Holistic Health Perspective
The holistic perspective on health and healing is
multidimensional. It assumes that there is a complex connection
between mind, body, and spirit. As a result, when healing is needed,
people who subscribe to this approach are open to a wide
range of therapies. They may opt for a combination of conventional
and non-conventional medical treatments.
Or, they might consider an approach
that belongs to
an altogether different healing tradition.
But, healing is not the only concern
when it comes to the holistic perspective. Advocates of the holistic approach
are concerned with enhancement
of personal health and the prevention of illness before it can take hold.
An optimal level of health demands a kind of holistic fitness.
From the perspective of holistic
health, fitness requires regular
physical exercise,
healthy
eating, good
mental health, positive social-emotional experiences, and attention to our
spiritual needs. It can be
said that, when we are "fit", our body, mind, and spirit are in tune with
one another.
Because it seems so simple, so straightforward,
we have a tendency to overlook the amazing power of physical exercise in
the overall formula for health and holistic fitness. Yet, a large body of research shows
that physical activity has a profound influence on our health.
Indeed, there are many positive correlations between our level of activity
and the health of our body and our mind. For example, physical
activity is correlated with a reduced probability of developing diabetes
and certain forms of cancer. It seems to enhance cardio respiratory health.
And, it seems to reduce the risk of depression and cognitive decline.
The many positive effects of physical exercise makes it imperative that we include
it in our quest for holistic fitness. We need to work on
our physical fitness as part of our everyday program of health
maintenance. We just have to be smart about it. As a rule, you
should always begin with a low level of exercise and increase over time as
your strength and endurance allows. Consult with your
physician or other qualified healthcare provider to determine the kinds of
exercise or workout you can safely tolerate. Then, if
possible, get a partner. The support of another person is important
for social motivation and safety.
While you are exercising, do not forget about your nutrition.
To maintain good health and to support the efficient functioning of your
body systems, you need to make healthy food choices. Healthy eating
will help keep your weight within acceptable limits and enhance the
positive effects of exercise. Healthy eating is an important
component of holistic fitness.
