Concerns About Hypnosis
Many people have heard that hypnosis can be quite helpful in initiating changes. However, some people are still concerned as to whether or not hypnosis is safe and effective.
One big concern is not remembering what happened. While some details may seem fuzzy, you will not be in an amnesia state after hypnosis. You will generally remember everything. The only exception is those memories you explicitly choose to have blocked through hypnotic suggestion.
You do not lose control during hypnosis. You remain fully aware and in control. Hypnosis is just being in a much focused state, and everyone goes into this state everyday. If you are watching a movie or reading a book and are unaware of someone else entering the room you are in a hypnotic trance. Your conscious mind is merely so focused on what you are doing that it ignores everything else going on around them. Even in these situations, you never lose control. For example, should your house catch on fire you would return to normal without any prompting.
You will wake up from a trance – no one has ever been permanently stuck in that condition. In some cases, you may fall asleep afterwards since you are so relaxed, but one way or another you will wake up on your own, even if unprompted.
In general, hypnosis is not dangerous. It is merely a more focused state than the everyday trances we fall into when we are reading an absorbing novel or watching a particularly engaging movie. However, to assure safety, you should always deal with a qualified professional whenever you undergo hypnosis.
Since you are completely in control at all times, you cannot be hypnotized against your will. It is impossible to trick someone into hypnosis. You also cannot be made to do something that you would not do normally. You are not going to go against your morals and ethics while hypnotized.
Hypnosis is not a truth serum. You are not going to tell your deepest secrets unless you are entirely comfortable with doing so. The hypnotist usually will not need all of the details of an issue as long as the patient is aware of them and how they may affect the treatment. Of course, during a hypnotherapy session, you may feel comfortable discussing things with your hypnotist that you have not discussed with other people. Still, you will reveal only what you want to reveal. If you are at all concerned about confidentiality, discuss your concerns with the hypnotherapist before beginning a therapeutic session.
While many people have concerns about hypnosis and hypnotherapy, these concerns are often unfounded and arise from a lack of knowledge about hypnosis. One of the best ways to alleviate your concerns is to find a qualified hypnotist you can trust and with whom you are completely comfortable. A good hypnotist will be able to allay any fears or concerns that you might have.
