Reprogramming The Mind With Self Hypnosis
Hypnosis is looked on with skepticism by some, who take it as no more than some
kind of hocus pocus. However, that could not be further from the truth. There is nothing magical about hypnosis – you can go into a trance-like state throughout your regular day. The only difference between this and self hypnosis is that self hypnosis is a conscious decision, and you decide ahead of time where and when to focus your attention, instead of randomly as you would naturally.
Some areas of hypnosis have become quite popular in recent years – especially its use in weight management and stopping smoking. However, hypnosis has potential in many other areas of concern. These include pain control, habit disorders, addictions, stress, self-esteem issues, sports enhancement, improving memory and concentration, and controlling symptoms from diseases. Self hypnosis has the potential to be an effective tool to help each of us manage key aspects of own mental and physical health.
How the mind works is quite amazing. It is like a recorder where our thoughts and experiences become tapes to play over and over again. Unfortunately, many of us play the negative experiences over and over, visualize negative outcomes to present situations, or revisit memories that stir up anxiety and depression. It is also common for people to speak internally to themselves in ways that are quite critical. When we replay these mental tapes, we pout ourselves into a trance state and become preoccupied and internally focused, and our own thoughts, imagination, and internal dialogue become destructive towards our real goals.
When we reprogram our subconscious mind for the positive, we can ask to be made aware of these unproductive states and behaviors so that we can choose to change them. This can be as simple as erasing a negative thought pattern, or covering it up with a new goal, so that our subconscious has a new message to work with. While it sounds easy, it is actually a very powerful tool.
Self hypnosis allows us to do this. When you use your imagination, you stir up feelings and these can alter behaviors and attitudes. As you change how you think from a negative to a positive, your feelings and behavior change to mimic this as well. Since you can see what is possible, the mind can set up new suggestions on how to achieve it – maybe suggestions that you had not thought of before. Since the mind works backwards from the goal through the steps you need to achieve it, seeing that goal clearly can make it that much easier to come up with a plan of action. Sometimes all your mind needs is a little tweaking through self hypnosis in order to visualize the goal in detail. Once that happens, the rest will often just fall into place and you will find yourself achieving goals that once seemed impossible.
